Cabo Rojo; Pirates stories and coin to find

Cabo Rojo is a small town located on the southwest of Puerto Rico. it's rich in history about Pirates and buried treasure. The people are quite charm and there is a good village water front called "Boqueron" where you can find local sea food restaurant, souvenirs and more.

This village abound many tourist from many countries such Europe, Asia and US. The Villager lives of fishing, scuba diving charters and the sell of souvenirs. Pretty close from here there is a ruins of what it was in the past the Cofresi’s birth places. Cofresi was one of the most notorious pirates during the 19th century. When we talk about Puerto Rico’s pirates, quickly we have to make reference of Cofresi because he was a sort of ‘terrorist’ during the years 1819 to 1825.

The Cabo Rojo’s folklore tells many time that Cofresi assaulted and sized vessels offshore taking with him and his crew all treasure found on board and bury it, maybe in this village or nearby. There is stories about his treasures where he buried chests full of Spanish doubloons. Also people tell about citizen finding those treasure on that area of Cabo Rojo.

The last time I detected there,it was in 2002, when a I found many currency. because I spent more time video shooting rather than detecting, only I detected in one
famous beach,"Combate"( in english means'combat').This beach is located right in the end-south of Cabo Rojo. Many people use to go there in Summer time. Also there is other beach close to the lighthouse called "playa sucia" where people use to go every weekend. Around that beach you can see some cliff with grotto and tiny caves where can be used by Cofresi as hideout.

If you planning to detect in Puerto Rico, don't forget to visit cabo Rojo for your next adventure.

Block island pirates stories

Block island is a small Island located among Rhode island, Long Island and Massachusett in the Atlantic Ocean and is separated from the mainland by Block Island Sound.

If we going to talk about treasure hunting in this island and local stories about Pirates, we could say that Block island is a sort of Treasure Island located in New England waters.

Michael Paul Henson in his book "America's Lost Treasure", he wrote some stories about Pirates in Block Island,

"Block Island is popularly believed to be one of the hiding places of Captain Kidd's treasure as well as other pirates' treasure. the island has been gone over many times by enterprising treasure seekers, asn it is tild that some booty has been found. In 1689, Frensh privateers captured Block island and made it a base for their operations on the Atlantic Coast. Some of the many treasure tales which still keep searchers busy along the island's cost are connected whith these provateers.(page 101)

"While Block island is known to have been a pirate hangout in the early days, what is not generally known, is on what part of the island Joseph Bradish buried his inmense treasure. I have an old book that state; "we buried ye money and ye jewels on the south point of ye island to the leeward." This statement was supposedly made by Bradish himself. This information narrows the search area for an interested treasure hunter"(page 175).

Metal Detecting in Puerto Rico

I begun metal detecting since 1991 when I bought my first metal detector CXII Grand master hunter. I begun making research since 1985, after that the fun came into my life with a new experience that I will never forget. Puerto Rico has many beaches to detect with restriction by any authorities. All beaches are public and open. because is a island you have so many beaches to select which one you want detect today but beaches are not the only places to detect. Puerto Rico has many other spot with old spanish ruins that you can detect, only you have to ask for permission if you go to some private property. Here is a list of one of the hottest beaches in San Juan to metal detecting. In these beaches I used to find minimum an a daily basic in coins $20.00 to $40.00. Because the Puerto Rican likes to wear gold and silver all time, even when they go to the beach, it's almost sure you find some gold wedding band, gold chain or some silver. In Ocean park is one of my favorite beaches to detect. It's located in San Juan close to Condado. In this beach there is a guy that use to snorkling every morning to search for lost watch on the water just to 6 feet depth. I saw when one day he found 4 casio underwater. This is the list: (all them in San Juan)
1. Ocean park- Pro; many coins and gold in the water to find. Cont; no public parking because is a neighborhood. If you find one, you're lucky!
2. Condado- Pro; coins, gold, silver to find, hotels around. Cont; pay parking, small beach.
3. Isla verde- Pro; long beach to walk. Cont; water is not clear at all, watch for delinquent.
4. Old San Juan beach(front the capitol). Pro; chance to find relic and old spanish coins. Also there is an old abandoned spanish fort. Cont; The problem with this beach is used by elements for homosexual activities.

Beaches outside San Juan;

1. Vega baja beach.Located in vega baja. Public beach managed by the local government.
2. Isabela beaches. This beach is used for surfer, maybe you have chance to find gold.
3. Crash boat, Aguadilla. Public beach
4. Añasco beach, Añasco. Public beach
5. Cabo Rojo's beaches; Buye, Boqueron beach (good for water detecting but lots of mosquitos), Combate beach(in summer time you can find here easily more than $20 in coins x couple hr.
6. Guanica's beaches; Playa Santa (there is two local treasure hunter detecting all time), Las ballenas(whales).
7. Ponce's beaches
8. Humacao's beaches; Palmas del Mar; this is a good resort with nice beach.
9. Fajardo; Seven Sea. This is a public beach good for detecting. I used to detect here with good oportunities to find old coins if you keep walking for the beach heading toward west side.
10. Luquillo. luquillo balneario. This is a Puerto Rico's best beach destination for turists and coin detecting. "La Pared beach" it's right in center of the town. Many surfer here loss theirs jewlery, rings, watch, etc.
Tips; In Puerto Rico you can feel confortable detecting because there is no extreme rules against treasure hunter. Only there is two US National Park that you don't want go there, "El Yunke" and "El Morro" and all Spanish fort located in old San Juan. They belong to the US National Park.

Garrett GTI2500

The Garrett GTI 2500 is one of the world's best metal detector ever built. I 'm using Garrett detector since 1991 and when I think to buy a new detector I think in Garrett, there is many reasons:
1. You can attach multiple search coil to one unit.
2. Long life
3. The GTI2500 you can use it as coin detector or attach the Eagle-Eye two box to search for caches.
